M6 closed northbound after five lorries crash

The M6 is currently closed northbound between junctions 16 and 17 following a serious collision just north of Sandbach Services.

Fire and rescue crews are at the scene of a road traffic collision which occurred just after 11am. Five heavy goods vehicles were involved and two people were trapped in vehicles.

One driver is believed to be seriously injured and has been airlifted to The Royal Stoke in Staffordshire.

Traffic is being diverted via the A500, A5022 and A534 and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

Firefighters released two casualties from their vehicles and they were transported to hospital, one by land and one by air ambulance. Crews made the area safe before leaving the incident in the hands of the police.   

Although fire and rescue crews have left the scene there is still a considerable amount of traffic disruption. The road remains closed and police are advising people to avoid the area.
