Young music stars set to wow the audience

Four young local musicians will perform at a special Gala Concert in Alderley Edge later this month.

Pianist Geordie Campbell (12), mezzo-soprano Anna Townsend (14), flautist Georgia Campbell (10) and trumpet player William Jeys (14) are all recent winners of their class at the Alderley Edge Festival. They will be performing for the first time with a full orchestra at Alderley Edge Methodist Church on Saturday 13th June.

Geordie, currently a pupil at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, will be soloist in a performance of Litolff's Scherzo, while Anna, a former Bowdon Young Singer of the Year, will be joining the orchestra to sing two movements from Elgar's Sea Pictures.

A flute concerto by Vivaldi is the choice of flautist Georgia who plays in the National Children's Orchestra, and fellow National Children's Orchestra player William will be soloist in a performance of a movement from Hummel's Trumpet Concerto.

The Alderley Edge Orchestra will also play a selection of classical favourites.

The concert is being organised by the Alderley Edge Orchestra, in association with the Alderley Edge Festival and will be introduced by Anna Meadmore.

Roger Dowling, Chairman of the Alderley Edge Orchestra, said "Local music lovers already know from the Alderley Edge Festival of the impressive solo talent of our young players.

"This new gala event will give four recent winners the chance to perform with a full orchestra. It will be a great evening."

Keith Lowe, Chairman of Alderley Edge Festival, said "Two organisations with similar aims – to bring the wonderful power of music to Alderley Edge and its residents. The Alderley Edge Orchestra and the Alderley Edge Festival have combined to create an evening of exquisite entertainment featuring the talents of four winners of The Alderley Edge Festival and the magic of the tremendous Alderley Edge Orchestra.

"It is a winning combination of two major organisations that are so important to the vibrancy of the village and the Community. Someone once said that 'Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.'

"On the 13th June we do not intend to be silent but bring you a contrasting performance from the relatively un-played Litoff Scherzo, to Elgar's enchanting Sea Breezes, also encompassing Vivaldi's enthralling flute concerto and Hummel's stunning Trumpet Concerto. This is in addition to the talent of the celebrated performance of the Alderley Edge Orchestra, who will be playing a selection of classical pieces.

"Jonny Depp recently quoted 'Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can't'. Music and song can be so inspirational and is so integral to the lives of many people. Our four soloists, Geordie Campbell, Anna Townsend, Georgia Campbell and William Jeyes, are examples of how music has become a passion, and it is this passion that will be in evidence at the concert. For all of us who love the expression of music, the sound of music and the sheer escapism that it brings, please come along and support both of our organisations on a night that will be one of the best in Alderley Edge this year."

Tickets cost £10 (children free) and can be purchased online or by calling 01625 549196 or 07815 601447.

We are very fortunate to have a symphony orchestra in Alderley Edge ... and one that attracts celebrated UK and international soloists. Recently, a brilliant horn player from the London Symphony Orchestra performed a concerto. This coming concert in the Methodist Church, including winners from Alderley Edge festivals and featuring popular orchestral pieces, is another eagerly-awaited event in the cultural life of the village.
