300 Scouts parade to celebrate St George's Day

The normally quiet surroundings of the Park were disturbed by bugles, drums and rousing cheers as Alderley District Scouts completed their annual St George's Day parade and service on Sunday afternoon.

The parade had been in doubt due to cuts to Cheshire Police budgets. However, on the day a combination of the Police and a good turn out of volunteer marshals ensured the parade of about 300 Scouts passed off safely.

The Scout Band led the parade down London Road where many people stopped to watch and take photos.

District Commisioner, Stephen Buckley said "Thanks to everyone for your help and support. We had a great parade and the Scouts really enjoyed the afternoon. We haven't decided on the format of next years event but we have been encouraged by the support from everyone and would like to keep the celebration in the village".

Unfortunately due to commitments I missed this years event but was informed it was fantastic.
We really should keep our traditions.
For future events If it's a case of volunteers to Marshall then the shout should go out, I really don't see how the police should be able to pull the rug on tradition.
However, It would be interesting to see which parades, marches or demonstrations are not compromised by the lack of police funds that we now contribute more to.

As a volunteer Marshall myself, I would encourage anyone to come and help next year. This was a great event and we must keep it going, come on people, you might enjoy it!!!

Ruth,

I would be happy to volunteer in any capacity that helps keep the St Georges Day Parade or the Remebrance Day Parade a part of Village life.

Who would I need to talk to?

Maybe it's something to be put to the new PC, to gather a list of people willing to Marshall events when available. I'm sure there would be more than enough.
I'll add my name to Alans

The May Fair also faces the same challenges relating to the removal of police support for public events. We will have limited support from them this year and none next, so - assuming that the May Fair continues - we shall be looking to make our own arrangements.

We do get the support at the May Fair from two marshals provided by Cheshire Marshals in Congleton, so there may well be a case for forming our own branch of that organisation - together perhaps with the residents of Wilmslow - to ensure that street events of this kind can continue.
