The Dogfather: Lenny loses his fear

thedogfather

Lenny the lurcher had a BIG problem with footballs. How did I know? His owner told me. One bounce of the ball was enough to send Lenny into a quivering wreck. He hated walking on rough surfaces and was terrified of certain locations freezing whenever he got near.

Exercising Lenny became an extremely complicated operation avoiding children at play, shingle paths, loud noises and numerous other frightening scenarios.

After a long and emotional consultation with Lenny's worried owner I slipped a simple rope lead on him and led him down the drive taking great care to let Lenny know he was not to walk in front of me at any time.

When Lenny refused to sit on command I followed up with a snap of the lead to let him know it was non-negotiable. Sit really did mean sit.

With a relaxed lead and an even more relaxed attitude I walked off down the road with Lenny trotting by my side. We walked right past the locations he was supposed to find terrifying heading for the gravel path he 'hated'.

In total silence we sauntered along simply enjoying the day. Apart from the odd 'heel' and an occasional 'good boy' I said nothing. It was clear Lenny was processing information regarding his environment and needed peace and quiet to do so.

I collected a football en route and began bouncing it as we went along. Lenny remained unperturbed as we bounced our way back home.

"Why?" was the big question his owner asked. Why had Lenny ignored everything he usually found so disturbing? The answer was simple... LEADERSHIP.

I can't visit all your dogs but I now have Pack Leader a DVD on my website showing you how to help your dog deal with his issues. Simply follow this link.
