Eleven teams took part in the 25th Wilmslow Swimathon raising well over £2,500 for many local and national charities.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Alderley Edge & Bollin Valley the swimathon took place over two Saturdays this month and saw two teams of adults, including one from the Red Cross, and one team from Lindow Scouts, two teams from local Brownies and six teams from various Guide units across the area.

Each team consisted of six swimmers who swam on a relay basis with the aim of swimming as many lengths of the pool as they can in 55 minutes.

"Water Hazards" adult team achieved the top score of 154 lengths on Saturday 14th March, whilst 1st Mottram St Andrew Guides swam 150 lengths in their 55 minutes on Saturday, 7th March.

Andrew Henshall, swimathon organiser, said "It may be several weeks until I know the final total but we hope to raise about £1,000 for each of the chosen charities, The Sick Children's Hospital and Diabetes UK, plus each of the Guide and Brownie units will raise over £100 each for their own chosen charities or their own funds.

"As far as I know the Water Hazards will raise the most as they are past the £400 mark already."

The Rotarians intend to hold the event in March again next year and are hoping to get more teams involved so they will be looking for some of the local schools and businesses to take up the challenge.

Andrew Henshall added "It was a delight to see so many young people taking part and so many other youngsters, parents and friends coming along to support the Rotary Club's event. Our thanks to all the staff at the Leisure Centre who accommodated us so well, and we look forward to even more teams taking part next year.

"Special mention should go to one of the teams of Brownies who had 2 members of their team swimming their lengths with arm floats on, as well as to the lane counters and most importantly the Guide and Scout leaders for giving up their Saturday evenings to bring their teams along and who all helped make both evenings such a success."
