Volunteers launch social club for the elderly

The Alderley Edge Luncheon Club, which celebrated its 50th birthday last year, is launching a new weekly social club.

The luncheon club serves a hot two course meal on Tuesdays and Thursdays to retired people living in the area and is run by Royal Voluntary Service volunteers. Commencing on Tuesday 21st April, they will also run a social club from 11am to 12.15pm every Tuesday.

Anne Bale, luncheon club manager, said "Members are invited to join in with games, discussions and other sociable activities whilst enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. The volunteers want the social club to reflect the interests of the members and so the activities will evolve over time."

Anne added "Initially the social club will be for existing members and those on the waiting list, however we are looking for volunteers to help run the club and also people who would be willing to share their knowledge, skills or experiences with us occasionally."

Royal Voluntary Service is a charity that specialises in assisting older people to enjoy their lives.

Two of the volunteers who came forward after reading the article about luncheon club on alderleyedge.com in January will be heavily involved in the social club. We also gained several assistant cooks from that article who are settling in really well. All our volunteers are greatly appreciated by our members and we always need new volunteers to replace those who have served the community for many years.
