Alderley Edge gains a Fruitcake

fruitcake

Local mum Anna Sheridan has opened the doors of her new business venture Fruitcake. Described as a "posh cafe" Fruitcake is located next to Somerfields on The Parade and will be open all day serving cooked breakfasts right through to children's teas.

Anna told us "everything served will be made on the premises with the emphasis being on high quality whilst keeping an eye on the prices. My mum will be making the cakes, we have employed a chef and takeaway sandwiches will be available for those in a rush".

Anna explained that children will be fully catered for. "I know how off putting huge portions can be for little ones and so often you end up paying £5 or £6 for a child's snack. We'll be offering eggy bread, cheese on toast, smaller sandwiches etc which will be ideal for the children at teatime."

As a mother of 6 year old twins Anna is only too aware of what families are looking for from a local cafe. Her intention is to create a very friendly atmosphere where people can feel comfortable bringing their children. Anna has also taken on the lease for the unit next door so she will be knocking through to create a family space with comfy sofas, big kitchen tables, toys for the children, wireless internet and even Sky tv for the dads. She is hoping to have the second room open in about six weeks.

Anna opened her first cafe 15 years ago and has run a number of different establishments, including a chain of coffee shops which she sold to Coffee Republic, but Fruitcake is her first venture since taking a six year break to look after her children. Anna is keeping quiet about exactly how she came up with the name Fruitcake though, "let's just say one of the family is a bit of a Fruitcake and it struck me one day after calling them Fruitcake that it would be a great name for the cafe."

I know some will say we've got enough cafes and coffee shops in the village but hopefully Fruitcake will offer something different and as a mother of two young children I'll certainly be giving it a try. I reckon some of Costa's locals will also appreciate parents with young children having an alternative place to meet up.

What is that on the wall at Fruitcake - a piece of Modern Art??

Well no, actually it is a dust sheet covering what would be an unsightly
hole in the wall to the adjoining unit. Rumour control has it that in the
very near future Fruitcake will expand into the adjoining unit to create a
dedicated child friendly area.

Very pleasing to see Fruitcake going from strength to strength.
