Allotment attack thought to be 'personal vendetta'

An allotment holder's plot was 'completely trashed' this week in what is thought to have been a personal attack.

Wilmslow resident Alan Howarth, who has had three plots at the Chorley Hall Lane site for over 30 years, arrived at his allotment on Tuesday morning to discover it had been vandalised.

The fences had been pulled down, his greenhouse smashed up, plants pulled up including raspberries, strawberries, cabbages, leeks and pear trees which were all stomped on and pulled up. Mr Henshaw's hen house was trashed, all the gates were cut off and moved and rubbish and fencing had been placed on the sheds.

Additionally gas canister pipes were cut, the coal bunker emptied and strewn everywhere, a bag of sawdust was ripped open and spread around and both petrol and oil were poured over the ground.

The damage occurred some time between 5pm on Monday, 8th December, and 8am on Tuesday, 9th December. No other plots were touched.

Sgt Andy Miller said "Mr Howarth believes this is a targeted attack due to the nature of the things that have been done, however we do not have any witnesses to the offence or credible suspects at this stage."

Lesley Howarth said "It is definitely personal because only our plots were targeted. It couldn't have been one person, it had to be two or three guys as they knocked down two heavy wooden gates. They must have been very strong."

Lesley added "It was someone who knew they were our plots, someone who has a personal vendetta against Alan. They think it will get Alan off the plot but it won't, it will make him more determined."

Cllr Mary Maczkowiak was called down to the incident on Tuesday morning.

She said "The damage that was done I wouldn't attribute to one person.

"They were extremely angry, you can see the anger in what was done. It was not just kids. Even his grandchildren's toys were destroyed."

Mary Maczkowiak added "The Parish Council will not leave this, if it takes forever I will make sure who perpetrated this criminal offence is caught. I will not leave it. To do this to an elderly couple is disgusting. It is completely out of order."

She continued "If anyone was walking down there or heard anything I hope they will contact the police.

"We have assured the police that the Parish Council will do everything they can to put things right. I am going to suggest we have a curfew on the site until the perpetrators are found. We have been getting so many reports of parties down there."

The police are appealing to anyone who was near the allotments at that time to contact Sgt Andy Miller if they heard or saw anything suspicious. Call 101 and refer to Incident 152 of 9th December 2014.
