Parish Council considers purchasing new noticeboards

Alderley Edge Parish Council is considering removing the noticeboard from The Parade and replacing it with some new more modern ones.

Cllr Melanie Connor said "I think the noticeboard down by the supermarket is a mess and people are putting all sorts of stuff on it and it doesn't really represent what the village is about in a good way. It just looks scruffy."

She added "One of the ideas we have talked about is having two noticeboards, one outside the medical centre when it's built, and another, with the same information on, outside the library. Freestanding with proper direction to places.

"There's lots of new types of noticeboards we can get, you can have them that are rolling so you get lots of different information on them.

"This is just to bring this to the table to think about how we give out information to people visiting the village and the people who live in the village who don't go on the websites and want to find things out quickly."

Cllr Mike Williamson commented "It's quite clear from the conversation with Waitrose that they would like to see that gone (the current notice board) but they are not prepared to contribute to the exercise and spend money on it."

He added "it's just the question of where's the best place to put it."

Councillors also discussed the possibility of having advertising on the noticeboards to fund their purchase and installation. They agreed they were interested in buying new noticeboards and would discuss this further after Christmas.

My suggestion would be a small notice board at the festival hall for mostly hall related activities and Parish council notices.
Then a larger notice board either near the current one on the parade or outside the library.

It's needs to be central in the village otherwise it won't be read, also it could be linked to an electronic version on the PC website.

I think the world has moved on a bit from notice boards. It has been replaced by the Internet. The best resource for AE is alderleyedge.com. I think we have all seen from the Parish Pledge mail shot just how poor AEPC's external communications are.

At the end of the day, the method of communication is far less significant than the authenticity and congruence of the message. A good starting point would be for the PC to work to be a trusted brand. I think it is clear that Cllr Connor and Williamson have no idea what is at the heart of this problem.

I'm sure there is some local government law that's states that PC or town councils must publicly notify the agenda of meetings etc which is why we have these notices boards from years back.

Until the laws are updated we are probably stuck with them. However not everyone can use or has a PC, smart phone or tablet. So we need those people to be able to access this information.
