Alderley Edge traders have secured the help of a local celebrity to switch on the Christmas lights this week and mark the official start of the festive celebrations.

Television presenter and actor Les Dennis, who is currently playing Michael Rodwell in Coronation Street and presented Family Fortunes for 15 years, will be joined by Heart FM DJ Lorna Bancroft.

They will be assisted in the task by Leila Vigerstaff from Year 3 at Alderley Edge Primary School and Florry Perry from Year 1 at Alderley Edge School for Girls, the two winners of the school's poster competition.

For the first time the event, which is organised by Alderley Edge Traders Action Group and the Parish Council, will include a Christmas market with 40 stalls (from 5pm to 10pm), a fun bus, giant snow globe and much to the delight of the little ones, Father Christmas will be making an appearance on his sleigh.

The actual switch on will take place at around 7.30pm and be followed by open mic performances and a host of fun acts will take to the stage throughout the evening, including Paul Pashley.

The evening's activities will take place along London Road, which will be closed to traffic between 3.30pm and 11.30pm on Thursday, 20th November, from its junction with Clifton Street to its junction with Chapel Road.

The alternative route during the closure will be via; Chorley Hall Lane, Ryleys Lane and Wilmslow Road.

Many of the village shops will be staying open during the evening whilst bars and restaurants will be offering a selection of special Christmas treats, including mince pies and mulled wine.

I'm really looking forward to the Christmas market in the village. Having been away from home for over 20 years it's going to be fun bumping into old friends
