Call for more speed watch volunteers

More volunteers are needed for the Alderley Edge Community Speed Watch group which was established two years ago in a bid to address the issue of speeding vehicles in the village.

A team of three volunteers, who have been trained in the use of a speed gun, spend an hour every two weeks recording the speed of passing vehicles on four main roads in the village: Brook Lane, Ryleys Lane, Congleton Road and Macclesfield Road.

They record vehicles that are travelling in excess of 35mph in a 30 mile speed limit, motorists are then sent a warning letter from the police, notifying them that if they are caught again, they could face a fine and three points on their licence.

Volunteer Godfrey Hall said "On average we probably take 60 vehicles, sometimes we take up to 80. The worst roads are going up Macclesfield Road and going down Brook Lane from the village.

"Three of us take part, one holds the gun and records the actual speeds, one gets the registration plate and the third one writes down the vehicle number, the speed and if possible what type of vehicle it is."

Speaking at the Parish Council meeting, Godfrey Hall explained that whilst they send reports on to the police they have had no feedback or response. He also said that many drivers are unaware that they are in a 30 mph zone and requested that more signs are placed in the village, particularly on Congleton Road and Brook Lane.

Godfrey added "Joe Public doesn't take a great deal of interest in speed guns. Ryleys Lane is where I've recorded the fastest speed in the last seven months. A commercial vehicle was doing 64mph in front of Ryleys School in school time. Let's be quite frank somebody is going to get killed on that road."

"With the change of PCSO we'd like to continue but there has been no response with people coming forward to help us. Unless more volunteers come forward to help us out I'm afraid speed watch will collapse. A great shame."

Anyone interested in volunteering for the group should contact PCSO Sarah Stanley on 07948522130 or leave a voicemail on 0845 458 6374.

Just a thought. Many A level subjects have a project part. Would it be helpful if a group of students 'did' the speedwatch for a while; as a project?
Perhaps any teachers/heads reading this could comment?
Is it a 'well done Councillor' idea or a 'Dumbass Councillor idea?

For me, this is a 'well done Councillor' idea, Duncan
