Alderley Edge could get its own town crier

The Parish Council is considering appointing a town crier for Alderley Edge.

Having been approached by the Nantwich Town Crier, who organised a children's competition at this year's Alderley Edge May Fair, the Parish Council has agreed to pursue the idea.

Cllr Mary Maczkowiak explained "He doesn't want to be paid, he doesn't want anything he just wants the position, the status that goes with it to be Alderley Edge Town Crier."

Cllr Melanie Connor commented "Every Saturday when I work in either Sandbach or Alsager I see the town crier having conversations with children and shoppers and making it a little bit more interesting."

Mary added "He would probably come to specific celebrations or events, like the May Fair and Christmas events."

The Parish Council felt it was a nice, interesting idea and agreed they would find out more.

Cllr Sue Joseph commented "We can give him things we want to spread in the community as an alternative to alderleyedge.com. We've got the modern way and now we've got the old way."

Sounds like a good idea but I would hope the position would be open for locals to apply!

Why give the position to someone outside the area ?
Surely someone locally could fulfill the position.

It's been a long time since I've made comment on alderleyedge.com but this really has to cause a response. When I read this I thought, this is either a Monty Python sketch or, with a more rational view, here's a promotional opportunity for the village of "Hear Ye, Hear Ye..... Weinholts have hot pies, buy now or they will soon be cold...... Martin in the AE Village Butcher has a cut of sirloin to fry for......" etc. it could bring some drama to the village. But to read of this person, as well intentioned he believes he is, "He doesn't want anything he just wants the position" according to Cllr Mary, pleeeeze. This is another Lord Alderley of Alderley or whoever he was.

Who is this guy? If fame is his requirement, and from the picture I assume for his wife also, I understand Amateur Dramatics could be an excellent stepping- stone irrespective of age or talent.

As for promotion at events such as "May Fair and Christmas events", is this the limit of out-of-box thinking we should expect for the Parish Council to promote sales and enterprise?

I know sending in responses is 'easy and faceless' but am more than happy to meet with those who are promoting this. In my opinion, this should be of such low priority on the PC agenda it gets onto "Agenda Item - 42"

Mike,
FYI: the item wasn't quite no. 42, as we don't have a no. 42 item on the agenda.
The proposal came from the chap himself, I believe. It doesn't hurt surely to listen to what is said?
Whether ought comes of it, we shall see in time.
Let the good citizens make their views known and that may influence the outcome.
My own view is that, as far as I can tell so far, its a 'bit of fun', so why not?

I think it would be a great idea. He would be able to go around the village alerting them to the plans of AEPC to concrete over the allotment site on Heyes Lane.
As Cllr Sue Joseph commented "We can give him things we want to spread in the community as an alternative to alderleyedge.com. We've got the modern way and now we've got the old way."
