Alderley Edge children evacuated

Year 6 children from Alderley Edge Community Primary School have been evacuated to Rawtenstall, Lancashire. As part of their topic on The Battle of Britain, children from Year 6 experienced a day as an evacuee during World War 2.

Dressed in costume, the children left school carrying only their lunches and a gas mask and set off on their journey to Bury. They climbed on a steam train and recreated the experience of being a wartime evacuee.

Head teacher Chris Perry said "At Rawtenstall, the children were met by volunteers from the Bury Transport Museum who re-enacted a mock selection process with the Billeting Officer and host families. The children gained a real insight into the frightening experience faced by young children in war."

One of the pupils said "I could never have imagined how scary and lonely the evacuees must have felt. I hope we never have to be evacuated."

W hat a wonderful idea! Alderley Primary School staff have such innovative ideas- what an excellent school this is. Why would anyone pay for private education when this superb school is on their doorstep?
