Warning after fake notes used in Alderley bars

Police are urging businesses and shoppers to be alert following an increase in reports of fake £20 notes being used in the area.

Over the last few months there have been a number of incidents in Wilmslow, Handforth and Alderley Edge involving counterfeit currency and recently fake notes were passed in two Alderley Edge bars. They were spotted by staff who were aware of what to look for and the incidents are being investigated by police.

Sgt Andy Miller said "We are aware of two recent incidents whereby fake £20 notes have been used in local licensed premises. We are on the lookout for the individuals involved and ask everyone to be vigilant and check such notes in their possession."

He added "The area has been targeted by an organised group who have been targeting numerous premises buying cheap items so that they get change in return for their fake note. We ran an operation to target this issue last month and gave out numerous information packs to business explaining how to spot such notes. This has resulted in a great arrest in Wilmslow after a man was caught after passing or attempting to pass 3 separate fake notes in various shops and business. He has now been charged and remanded in prison."

Due to the vigilance of local employees a 31-year-old male was arrested and charged with three counts of passing, or attempting to pass, counterfeit £20 notes at Barkers, Boots and The Old Dancer Pub in Wilmslow towards the end of July.

If any shops or businesses require further information on how to spot fake bank notes contact Wilmslow Neighbourhood Policing Team by calling 0845 458 6374 and request an information pack.
