Church packed for service to commemorate WW1

Mottram St Andrew

Mottram St Andrew paused to commemorate the lives of millions, including some from their own village, who gave their lives 100 years ago in the First World War.

Rev Ben Clowes led a packed chapel in a service of commemoration through hymns, prayers, readings and poems on Sunday 3rd August.

Rev Clowes said "One of the most poignant moments of the service was the reading by the Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Bill Pilkington, of an extract from a letter from a soldier, probably from Mottram St Andrew, who wrote from the trenches about the busyness of life continuing under the Edge and wondering if anyone in the future would remember them.

"Each member of the congregation was given a red ribbon to wear on 4th August, the anniversary date and everyone was encouraged to join in the national 'Lights Out' campaign."

The Alderley Edge Branch of the Royal British Legion were in attendance and the church was pleased to welcome the Mayor of Cheshire East, Cllr Wesley Fitzgerald and his wife Joan. During the service a collection was taken to support the work of the Legion and over £250 was raised.

Plans are already underway for the special Christmas Eve Carol Service which takes place each year and which this year will have a 'football' theme to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the World War 1 Christmas Truce.
