Cheshire East Council is proposing to reduce the speed limit on a section of the A34.

The Council is planning to introduce a 50mph speed limit on the following sections of the A34 Congleton Road:

  • A34 Congleton Road (Congleton to Marton)

From a point 200 metres north of Moss Lane to a point approximately 355 metres south of Oak Lane.

  • A34 Congleton Road (Marton to Monks Heath)

From a point 155 metres north of Davenport Lane to a point south of the junction with Alderley Edge bypass.

  • Bollington Lane

Between the junction with the A34 Congleton Road and A537 Chelford Road.

All objections and representations in respect of the proposed order must be sent in writing to Mr R Welch, Cheshire East Highways, 6th Floor, Delamere House, Delamere Street, Crewe, CW1 2LL. All correspondence must be received by 11th September quoting "(A34 Congleton Road) (Parishes Between Marton and Monks heath) (50 mph Speed Limit) Order 2014."

They recently introduced speed restrictions of 50 and 30 mph on the Holmes Chapel to Chelford Road, down to 30 skirting round Jodrell and on the tight corners where most accidents happen. Has slowed the traffic down & hopefully will reduce some of the awful accidents I see.

I think this is a good idea providing that the new limits are strictly adhered to.

I also think that reduced speed limits should be enforced on the "two-lane" Alderley Edge by-pass as quite often I am overtaken whilst adhering to the 60mph speed limit. One fatal accident has already occurred.
Perhaps ignorant drivers think "bye-pass" = 70 mph irrespective of number of lanes.

@MelanieConnor: I'm not convinced the 30 at Jodrell will achieve much. If you do attempt to stick to 30 you just get hounded by drivers behind. It just looks too rural, and so the majority of drivers ignore it. In my opinion it could be counterproductive - there's bound to be someone who gets frustrated behind someone doing 30 and makes a rash overtake.

In terms of accidents on the Holmes Chapel Road, it might be worth pointing out that according to STATS19 data, in the 3 complete years before the 50mph limits were imposed (2005-2007 inclusive), there were 5 serious injury accidents on the A535. In the first 3 complete years since (2009-2011), there were 9. And in 2012 & 2013 there have been 6 more. So the speed limit has come down but serious injury accidents have gone up by 80%.

Allan,

The bypass has a "hard" central reservation making the speed limit 70 mph.
When I get the chance I always take an alternative route as there are only so many roundabouts one person can take.

Richard, The A/E by-pass is 60 mph not 70

Richard,
I think you are confusing the Alderley Edge by pass with the linking A34 northbound.

There is no central reservation on the AE by pass so surely the National speed limit on a two lane road is 60mph as I stated previously.

Can anyone "in authority" clarify please ?

@Allan: Yes, the Alderley Bypass is single carriageway, so the maximum speed limit is 60mph for cars, 50 for coaches, most vans + small trucks, 40 for HGVs.

The Wilmslow bypass further north is dual carriageway, so the speed limit is 10mph higher for each category of vehicle.

Apologies, yes I was thinking of the A34 and not the Bypass.

Just incase people hadn't noticed that the speed limit has already changed on the Congleton road passed Marton! National speed limit changes to 40 nearer to the Tarmac place now!

The biggest improvement to safety on the A34 would be to ban parking on the roadside up the hill out of Alderley, past the De Trafford Arms. Cars park on both sides for some considerable distance reducing the road width to little more than a single carriageway.

I have witnessed several 'close shaves' as vehicles come round the corner, down the hill towards the village to suddenly come across this constriction with a bus or truck coming the other way and filling the available road space.

I know parking in the village is difficult, but that's no reason to allow such a dangerous situation to exist.
